Donor Story: Mary

Mary and her husband Jeff live in Parry Sound but have frequently travelled to Sudbury to receive specialty care throughout their lives.

In 2004, Mary was diagnosed with breast cancer, which reoccurred in 2018. Both times, she was glad that she was surrounded by the compassionate health care team at the Shirley and Jim Fielding Northeast Cancer Centre at Health Sciences North (HSN) who helped her through her treatment. Understanding that Mary was from out of town, her oncologist and health team worked with the Parry Sound hospital and OTN to ensure she was getting the care she needed, where she needed it. In 2018, when her cancer returned, she underwent a double mastectomy and significant courses of chemotherapy to eradicate the cancer. Today, Mary is cancer free with a positive outlook on her experience.

In 2017, Jeff had a heart attack in Parry Sound and was immediately transferred to HSN to receive care. During this scary time, Mary and Jeff found comfort as they learned about HSN’s history of excellence and specialty in cardiac care. Jeff was in the hospital for nearly two weeks, where he received a life-saving bypass surgery. With Jeff being nearly two hours away from home, Mary spent quite a lot of time driving between Sudbury and Parry Sound, but found the drive a lot less stressful and closer than driving to Southern Ontario.

Grateful for the care she and her husband received at HSN, Mary knew she wanted to give back in a meaningful way. “I was impressed by all the healthcare professionals at HSN who worked so seamlessly with my local hospital to provide us care,” said Mary. “I have always tried to support my community hospital, but I had no idea my husband and I would need so much care! I am happy to know that by donating, I am helping enhance care for not only my friends and community, but for my own family as well.”

Les deux fois, elle a été heureuse d’être entourée d’une équipe de professionnels de la santé compatissants au Centre de cancérologie du Nord-Est Shirley et Jim Fielding d’Horizon Santé-Nord (HSN) qui l’a aidée pendant ses traitements. Sachant que Mary n’était pas de Sudbury, son oncologue et son équipe de soins de santé ont collaboré avec l’hôpital de Parry Sound et OTN pour s’assurer qu’elle recevait les soins dont elle avait besoin et à l’endroit où elle en avait besoin. En 2018, lorsque son cancer est réapparu, elle a subi une double mastectomie et des séries de traitements de chimiothérapie intense pour éradiquer le cancer. Aujourd’hui, le cancer a disparu et elle a une attitude positive à l’égard de son expérience.

En 2017, Jeff a subi une crise cardiaque à Parry Sound et a été immédiatement transféré à HSN pour se faire traiter. Pendant cette période angoissante, Mary et Jeff ont été rassurés de prendre connaissance de la tradition d’excellence d’HSN et des soins cardiaques spécialisés qui y sont offerts. Jeff a passé presque deux semaines à l’hôpital où il a subi un pontage qui lui a sauvé la vie. Avec Jeff à plus de deux heures de chez lui, Mary a passé pas mal de temps à faire le trajet entre Sudbury et Parry Sound, mais a trouvé ce trajet moins stressant et plus court que celui qu’elle aurait à effectuer pour se rendre dans le sud de la province.

Reconnaissante des soins qu’elle et son mari ont reçus à HSN, Mary savait qu’elle voulait redonner à HSN d’une manière concrète. « J’ai été impressionnée par tous les professionnels de la santé à HSN qui ont travaillé de façon si harmonieuse avec mon hôpital pour nous prodiguer des soins, affirme Mary. J’ai toujours essayé de soutenir mon hôpital communautaire, mais je ne savais pas que mon mari et moi aurions besoin de tant de soins! Je suis heureuse de savoir qu’en faisant un don, je contribue à améliorer les soins non seulement pour mes amis et ma communauté, mais pour ma propre famille aussi. »

Mary encourage tout le monde à redonner à sa communauté d’une façon ou d’une autre. Chaque dollar donné aux fondations à Horizon Santé-Nord a une grande incidence sur les soins aux patients, et avec votre soutien, nous pourrons continuer à prodiguer des soins vitaux lorsque les patients en ont le plus besoin.
